I'm a delicatessan hound! In my travels, I discovered that each ethnic group had their own delicatessan with their own custom-made meats, which always included sausages.
Dog in a Box had it's humble beginnings in Portland, Oregon as the Dog House Restaurant. It was only 250 square feet and had no seating; walk-up and drive-through only. We might have been small, but we were popular, serving as many as 400 people a day. In the big city of Portland, it quickly became a home-town favorite.
In 2004, we opened our first store on Pearl Street in Eugene, Oregon. Then in 2006 we opened our downtown store at 6th and Charnelton. The new name, Dog in a Box, was inspired by the checkered, box-like, tiles at our Charnelton location.
You can now dine indoors or outdoors at our "Dog on the Deck" at the 17th and Pearl location (you can even bring your dog!). Our Charnelton Street location is still get-n-go service. No inside dining.
We love having Eugene as our home-base. We feel that a good, local, Oregon-grown, hot dog and sausage company didn't exist and we are proud to showcase our love of sausages and what we KNOW we can do better than anyone else.
Our focus is on recipes, variations on tastes, textures, spices, and all the components of sausages from many European cultures.
We came up with the hot-dog and sausage concept because we think it is an ignored part of American cuisine. We want it to be accorded its proper place in Americana while also bringing it into the 21st century.
